Essilor launches Varilux X, its premier progressive lens

More than 200 ECPs from around the UK descended on the Midland Hotel in Manchester earlier this week for the UK launch of Varilux X, the eighth generation of Essilor’s premier progressive lens.

The new lens has been designed to meet the changing visual needs of Generation X (people born between the mid-1960s to early 80s) with Essilor promising a reinvention of near vision at arm’s length.

Head of marketing Jonathan Cohen told delegates: ‘We will liberate Generation X presbyopes who are multi-tasking all day in an accelerated and online world and always feel rushed. Progressive lenses should not slow them down.’

Visual agility and spontaneity were said to be at the heart of the new near vision zone design, helping patients to minimise head movement in search of a visual ‘sweet spot.’ Previous designs of progressive lens utilised a single distance of 40cm in viewing direction, but Varilux X was said to handle multiple near distances between 40-70cm.

Essilor claimed the lens would offer a 75% match with wearers’ visual needs within arm’s length, the highest match ever achieved by a progressive lens, compared with the 59% match average from alternative premium progressive designs.
