Excel event highlights success of newly qualified optometrists

Specsavers' Excel event celebrates exam success of 75 newly qualified optometrists

Specsavers held its Excel event last week in Birmingham to celebrate the exam successes of 75 newly qualified optometrists.

The event, which is held four times a year, started with an evening celebration reception and was followed with a day of interactive CET-accredited learning about patient-centred clinical case management.

Specsavers’ head of optometry development Kiki Soteri said: ‘It’s inspiring to spend a day with these young optometrists and to open their eyes to all the development opportunities that are available to them. We always get great feedback from the delegates who really enjoy the peer discussions and learning from experienced practitioners, as well as the opportunity to catch up with friends from university and make new friends. With National Eye Health Week just around the corner, it was great to hear that most of them are already working with OCT in their practice which means that they are well-placed to detect sight threatening conditions early and make better referral decisions.’

Newly-qualified optometrist Neha Bhayani of Specsavers Melton Mowbray added: ‘When a patient comes in, it’s never the same thing. It’s about getting to the bottom of what is going on so that when there’s actually a problem there, you are able to manage it appropriately. There’s always things to look forward to in optometry; the learning doesn’t stop here.’
