GOC reviews pandemic impact on plans

A second remote General Optical Council meeting has been held online

A second remote General Optical Council meeting considered a review of its strategic plan, the Education Strategic Review and temporary changes to optometry education and training requirements.

The Council reviewed the five-year Fit for the Future strategic plan in relation to the pandemic but agreed that only minor additions would be made.

It also approved the use of reserves of up to £315,000 over nine years to support the implementation of two schemes from the Education Strategic Review.

Council noted a high ratio of applications to admissions on optometry programmes and difficulty in recruiting students for dispensing courses in a report of the optical education sector for the 2018-2019 academic year.
