Waitrose has introduced onions that don't make the chopper cry

Tears while chopping onions could become a thing of the past as Waitrose launched a sweet onion that the supermarket said was the first tearless variety.

Sunions have been created for people with sensitive eyes and cooking with children through decades of cross-breeding less pungent strains of onion.

Paul Bidwell, onion buyer at Waitrose, said: ‘Ideal for taking the tears out of the kitchen, the sweetness of this type of onion lends itself perfectly to a variety of dishes, from salads to hot meals.’
