?Maui Jim and Vinylize create new frame
Author: Chris Bennett
Maui Jim has teamed up with Budapest-based Vinylize to create a limited-edition frame built using the imagery and vinyl from a pressing of Tolo’s cover of Hula Blues.
Art, music and technology are all drawn together in the frame, Hula Blues, said Maui Jim. Not only is the vinyl of the record laminated with acetate but the acetate is handcrafted from the artwork of the record’s label. Bringing together Vinylize’s unique imagery and styling with Maui Jim’s PolarizedPlus2 lens technology creates the ultimate in timeless style and functionality it claimed.
The frame is a shallow Wayfarer outline with the striated vinyl to the outside and a vibrantly coloured tropical patterned inside. Gold lettering at the hinge displays the Vinylize logo and the temple inside with Hula Blues, the lens is laser etched with Maui Jim.
The 12-inch recording of Tolo’s Hula Blues was created by Vinylize for the project in its Budapest workshop. The artwork was inspired by the imagery on the original 1923 sheet music of the Hawaiian classic Hula Blues. The artwork also carries over into the lining of the spectacle case, the lens cloth and the presentation box. The music, which is imprinted on the frame’s vinyl can be listened to on the Vinylize website.
