Moorfields quadruples cataract operations

The London eye hospital will quadruple the number of operations taking place

Moorfields Eye Hospital has announced plans to quadruple the number of cataract operations taking place in a single week to tackle growing waiting lists caused by Covid-19.

Its cataract drive would see eight operating theatres across six days from September 14 provide four times the cataract procedures it would usually perform in a week.

Theatres at Moorfields Private would only provide emergency surgeries during the week to make it possible and the surgery process has been adapted so that patients only spend an hour at the site.

David Probert, chief executive of Moorfields Eye Hospital, said: ‘This project is the first of its kind and could be an example to rest of the NHS for a new way to clear waiting lists in the wake of Covid-19.’
