Moroccan ECPs at odds over law

Ophthalmologists and opticians in Morocco clash over a proposed law change

Ophthalmologists and opticians in Morocco have clashed over a proposed law change that would see opticians prevented from conducting eye exams, according to Morocco World News.

In Morocco, opticians are currently able to perform vision tests and dispense glasses. Ophthalmologists said this constituted a conflict of interest and claimed refraction is a medical issue that should be dealt with by them alone.

A controversial amendment to change the law and ban opticians from testing, apart from in special circumstances, is making its way through the Moroccan parliament but is yet to be passed. June 12 saw thousands of opticians take to the street to protest the law change and an organised strike and sit-in has been planned for the start of July.
