Opticians' staff fund Malawi eye care training course

Scottish opticians fund the training of eye health workers in Malawi

Scottish opticians at the Kirkintilloch and Bishopbriggs Specsavers practices have funded the training of eye health workers in Malawi.

The £3,000-year fund has gone towards the running costs of the course, helped to provide accommodation for those training and supplied them with an official certificate once the course is completed in Blantyre, Malawi.

Neil Drain, practice director of Kirkintilloch and Bishopbriggs, said: ‘We’re so proud to be giving Blantyre’s optometrists and ophthalmic clinical officers the tools they need to provide frontline eye services. It’s hugely gratifying to see how the project has taken off, continued to grow and found its own identity over the past few years, and the support from Specsavers in Kirkintilloch and Bishopbriggs remains key to that.’
