An optometrist has been sentenced to a 12-month community order for dangerous driving.
Rohali Nawaz drove his badly damaged hired Mercedes for 40 miles after crashing into the central reservation of the M62 motorway in Yorkshire on May 4. Nawaz reportedly only took a cursory look at the damage before getting back behind the wheel.
He pleaded guilty to the charge of dangerous driving in August and his barrister has said that he would have to face a disciplinary hearing before the GOC to decide if he was able to carry on working.
Judge Neil Davey QC took into account Nawaz’s previous good character and early guilty plea when making his decision to impose a community order and driving ban. Davey said that parts of the damaged car could have been flung into the path of other vehicles and that Nawaz didn’t realise just how much of a danger he presented to other drivers.
