Man who broke into Specsavers causing £13,000 of damage is spared jail

A man who broke into the Murraygate Specsavers in Dundee causing £13,000 of damage and lost revenue has been spared jail.

Douglas Laidlaw admitted breaking into the shop and stealing spectacles, an iPad, coins and a lens case. CCTV showed him kicking in the bottom of the door, and crawling through the hole in the glass. He was shown entering consulting rooms, where he left one of his trainers. Police identified Laidlaw after he was seen wearing a single shoe while he was under the influence at a nearby homeless unit.

Specsavers estimated £10,000 loss of earnings while a new door was fitted and carpets were cleaned of the robber’s blood.
