Roundtable discussion highlights issues for visually impaired students

Visually impaired students discuss university and Disabled Students’ Allowance

A roundtable discussion was held at the University of Birmingham to hear from students with vision impairment about their experience of university and Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA).

Chris Skidmore MP, minister of state for universities, science, research and innovation attended the event, which was hosted by the University of Birmingham’s Vision Impairment Centre for Teaching and Research (VICTAR) and the Thomas Pocklington Trust (TPT). Students told Skidmore that they would not have been able to attend without the DSA.

Skidmore said: ‘We are currently looking at the Disabled Students’ Allowance, we know students are grateful for it as it helps them continue their courses, but more can be done. The roundtable discussion demonstrates to me issues such as the supportive equipment for students who are visually impaired need and the technology that is needed to allow students to progress in their courses.’
