Specsavers welcomes 510 optometry students onto its placement scheme

Specsavers has welcomed 510 optometry students onto its placement scheme this summer for the seventh consecutive year.

The multiple is hosting approximately 69% of the second-year optometry cohort throughout the UK. Before starting the placement, students attend a two-hour development session at their universities that focuses on team building and communication.

The four to six week scheme has been designed to help students put their theoretical knowledge into practice and to prepare them for their pre-registration year after finishing their course.

Aston University optometry student Lizzy Alport said: ‘I spent my first week shadowing the optometrist and the dispensing opticians. I’ve done a few stereopsis and colour vision tests under supervision and am hoping to do some dispensing and pre-testing too.

‘I’m getting to see a lot of things I wouldn’t see at university, as we test each other most of the time, so we’re always looking at young and healthy eyes.’
