STEM students visit Big Bang Fair in Birmingham

Specsavers hosted a series of interactive activities at the Big Bang Fair in Birmingham to encourage students to think about an optics career.

The event, which took place on March 13-16, welcomed students aged 14 and above studying science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and offered both fun and educational activities put together by Specsavers practice directors, optometrists, head of enhanced optical services and members of the careers team.

Students were able to see their friends’ eyes through an OCT scanner from Birmingham Optical Group, experience simulation vision impairment using virtual reality technology and try out a video otoscope.

Lucy Knock, early careers manager, said: ‘This is the third year Specsavers has showcased our services to teens at the Big Bang, which has proven to be a great opportunity to raise awareness of careers in optometry on a national level. We are committed to building relationships with the next generation of optometrists and exhibiting at STEM career events is a significant part of our overall Early Careers strategy.
