Times change, and we change with them. Though I have previously advocated increased recruitment to the profession, I confess that I now subscribe to the laissez faire school. Student intake is now buoyant and the beneficial effects are already being felt. In this respect, I also take on board Andrew Jarvis's view regarding the public's present ease in obtaining early sight-testing appointments (Letters, January 19).

That is not, however, to ignore the continuing manpower requirements of the corporate sector. When faced formerly with the restrictive policy of the then Establishment, it had no option but to grin and bear it. Nowadays, however, it is able not only to fish in the increased capacity of the training institutions pool but also to utilise its special relationship with Anglia Polytechnic University. That is what competition is all about!
