Zeiss reach sustainability milestone

Optical lens company Zeiss has announced the success of a number of its sustainability initiatives.

Optical lens company Zeiss has announced the success of a number of its sustainability initiatives. The Green, Safe, Responsible project undertaken by the company focused on ensuring the business used less water and energy, and produced fewer emissions.

As part of a commitment to the environment, the company has pledged to achieve carbon neutrality by 2022.

Zeiss said its UK factory used no water for the process of lens cutting, with the entire process of manufacturing Zeiss lenses utilising less than five litres of water per day. Lens cuttings are also recycled at the factory, ensuring a minimal amount of waste is sent to landfill.

A company statement explained that Zeiss now saves ‘enough water to meet the drinking water need of 180,000 people for one year,’ and saves ‘enough energy to provide 3,100 households with electricity for one year.’
