This week, once I have driven to a castle some 30 miles from home to test my eyesight is adequate, I have to take my son, Spike, to pick up his things from his university hall of residence. I am sure many of you are similarly coming to terms with your little geniuses relying upon online PowerPoints and video-tuition from the dreamy spires of their bedrooms. His clever friend Milli, still elated from her acceptance to Trinity Hall, Cambridge, is being asked for the same fees to complete next year’s studies from her parental home. Et in arcadia ergo sum no longer applies.
