Bill Harvey: The birth of ‘optimetry’

This year will also see the launch of our monthly interactive CET offer

I hope you all had a relaxed and fulfilling break. As seems to be a requirement, I will kick off 2017 with a look ahead. And, after such a baffling and battering 2016, I would like to introduce a new term – optimetry. This compounding of two etymologically separate but similarly sounding (so I can get away with it) terms refers to the science of seeking and measuring the best outcomes.

So what has this publication to offer the optimetrist in 2017? Well, our three-year programme of CET provision continues and, in this mid-cycle year, we will be publishing in areas less represented elsewhere. For example, our series on hearing and hearing impairment continues, and we also begin a look at statistical analysis and interpretation – this is increasingly important (and therefore, I argue, relevant to CET) for anyone wishing to offer sound and objective advice to a patient seeking to know more about the many eyecare-related issues that are often portrayed in the wider media.
