Letter: Plastic’s not fantastic

Why is Optician magazine wrapped in a thick plastic sleeve?

Why is my, wonderfully informative and essential reading, Optician magazine wrapped in a thick plastic sleeve?

Like many I love to have my proper printed paper copy of Optician and hope it will continue to be available in this format. Last week J&J wanted to promote their 1 Day Moist multifocal, but the addition of the plastic sleeve is not helping to promote their product and serves little purpose. The sleeve is now in my bin.

The nation is waking up to plastic pollution, I’ve had three patients this week ask about schemes to recycle their contact lenses and packets having correctly assumed that they are not biodegradable. I too have decided to try to be responsible with my plastic use.

Please, if a manufacturer asks you to coat the lovely Optician in an unnecessary sleeve of plastic, just to suit their marketing, would you please try to decline the request for the sake of the planet.

I predict plastic and its recyclability is going to be a hot topic in the coming years and the optical industry will be held account for its contribution – please would Optician lead the way!

With many thanks for always delivering a brilliant magazine.
