Letter: Strange invitation for one who disapproves of CLs

Letters
Why does the BCLA invite these speakers to its meetings?

I note that author of the ‘ditch contact lenses to save your eyes’ feature in the Daily Mail ‘Simple ways to stay young’ article is scheduled to be the speaker at the BCLA meeting on January 23 with the advertised lecture title ‘Surgical advances for correction of presbyopia’.

I can introduce him to wearers of more than 35 years who do not suffer from any of the conditions he mentions. I am fairly certain that there are many skilled and experienced practitioners in the UK and beyond who can do likewise. I guess it is a question of practitioner skill and competence, much as you might expect to be the case with refractive surgery.

It is a puzzle to me why the BCLA invites speakers to its meetings whose main agenda is to stop people wearing contact lenses; in this case with the transparent agenda of promoting surgical alternatives.

If they proceed with this speaker one has to ask whose side is BCLA on? How did this invitation come about? Should the BCLA meetings secretary now consider their position?
