Letters: Laser misguided

I refer to the paid for advert in the recent issue (Optician, November 1) by Optical Express.

I was somewhat surprised that the clinical director approved the above for publication as the wordy contents could be reduced to: ‘Why don’t we recommend Lasik and IOL replacement in preference to contact lenses on environmental grounds?’

Surely an invasive laser or surgical procedure is riskier than contact lens wear. Where after all I note the contact lens can simply be removed if there is any problem. We also can fit deep amblyopia or single eye patients whereas Lasik surgeons are reluctant to treat, presumably as they are uncomfortable with potential failure. The matter is one of education only regarding disposal of discarded lenses. It should not impinge on clinical recommendation. This sounds like something dreamed up in the Optical Express marketing department.
