Recently there have been conversations running concerning what is a suitable method for viewing a patient’s retina. While this may seem a basic topic that should be a ‘no brainer’ for an optometrist some interesting points emerged. From the outset optometrists still seem to be trained to use a direct ophthalmoscope to look at a retina as the default.

The question that arose was whether it was acceptable to use a fundus camera as the default in a modern world and there seemed to be as many for and against whether this was acceptable. We all know that there are various times when viewing a retina can be complicated and at times any view is better than none.
