As I do when reading most of Frank Norville’s letters to Optician, I found myself nodding along in agreement with his thoughts on the situation around blue light absorbing lenses.

My worry is that the blue light lens ship has long sailed for ECPs. When the blue light absorbing lens movement really gathered momentum eight or nine years ago, retail optics had a solution to the genuine problem of increasing levels of device usage and continued exposure to blue light from LED lighting. But it was oversold.

We’re all familiar with the overzealous claims about the actual damage blue could potentially do to our eyes and the fines handed out. As ECPs shied away, or were even blocked from dispensing blue light lenses, the door was left open for other retailers to enter the market, who have developed something of a stranglehold.
