As I turned on to the M25 I realised I had forgotten my race belt, I knew it wasn’t going to be my day.

I’m not a superstitious person but a sport like triathlon requires a systematic approach and attention to detail. Every event offers some new learning so why didn’t I read my own report of the 2015 Fambridge Yacht Haven Half Iron Triathlon before I embarked on the 2016 edition of the race?

Anyone who follows my sporting exploits will be aware of the number of events I have tackled over the years. But familiarity breeds contempt. For 2016 I decided to do the double and combine the Fambridge tri and the Prudential Ride London 100 in my efforts to raise money for Blind Veterans UK. This was the first leg.
