There was a time in our society when 'quacks' and 'carpet baggers' were shamed and pilloried.

There was a time in our society when 'quacks' and 'carpet baggers' were shamed and pilloried. Today's new breed are feted by captains of industry and government ministers, as well as receiving fat cheques with which to expand their enterprises (News,  July 1).

I find this somewhat galling, having spent the last 42 (enjoyable) years as a qualified dispensing optician - one of the large band of unsung heroes keeping the nation's eyesight ticketyboo, to live in the shadow of this new 'shooting star'!
