I hope your new year has started well, which is not something we can say for the NHS! Barely a day goes by when we are not reading headlines of record attendances at accident and emergency, patients kept in ambulance queues or operations being cancelled. Before looking at the reasons for these issues, we should firstly remember that for every one problem patient we hear about, there are many many more who are being dealt with quickly and expertly.

Unfortunately the media rarely publishes good news and we should not forget that despite the headlines, the NHS still remains the envy of many across the world. The reasons for the struggles the NHS faces are no doubt complex, and over the past few weeks I have read various opinions as to why the NHS is in trouble. I doubt if my list will be exhaustive.
