ABDO hopes dispensing opticians can play a vital role in the provision of community services

In light of the growing opportunities for optometrist progression, ABDO is very hopeful and confident dispensing opticians (DO) can play a vital role in provision of community services in the foreseeable future.

Speaking at the NOC, I outlined ABDO’s aspirations for DOs and offered an overview of the structural changes taking place within the Association; which sees the introduction of a National Clinical Committee and the formation of seven ABDO regions.

With effect from January 1, 2017, ABDO will operate with one overarching clinical committee which will be responsible for all professional matters and engaging with stakeholders to offer insight into the capabilities of the DO. In many cases, the profession does not wholly understand the remit and responsibilities a DO has, which is a real shame. This is not restricted to the FBDO qualification, but also contact lenses and low vision.

In addition, ABDO has abolished its old 13 area structure and moved to regions to mirror NHS England and incorporate the devolved nations. Within each region there are regional leads supported by several sub-regional leads. The key objective is to engage with all optical professionals and LOCs/ROCs/AOCs to raise the profile of the DO and to identify opportunities where involvement in services can be achieved.

Both the NCC and regional leads will be working closely along with the ABDO board to ensure mass engagement across the membership. While challenges exist for all, there are also massive opportunities within the profession to work together and it is essential there is finally a recognition of each other’s capabilities so our patients can benefit. It is not a revolution in ABDO’s mind but evolution.
