This time last year I was finalising the content for my BCLA presidential address. I researched some quotes to feature in one of my title slides.

Quote one was from the Greek philosopher Heraclitus who said: ‘Change is the only constant in life.’ Quote two from Einstein said: ‘The measure of intelligence is the ability to change.’ Quote three was provided by Darwin who observed: ‘It is not the strongest of the species that survives, not the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.’

Turns out those guys knew what they were talking about. Covid-19 has forced us to make changes on an unprecedented scale. It has caused global upheaval and some things have changed irreversibly.

As eye care professionals we have had to find a way to make things work. This has shone a spotlight on the ingenuity, innovation and vision that I knew we had in abundance. As a profession, we are pioneers.

I am forever grateful for the opportunity to serve as BCLA president. I look forward to passing on the baton to my successor, Indie Grewal, who I have no doubt will work with our new chief executive, Luke Stevens-Burt, to lead us into a bright new era at the forefront of eye health.
