Locsu
Succession planning and leadership is an ongoing activity for the sector

With LOC AGMs on the horizon and a facilitated online LOC induction course this month, the issue of succession planning and leadership is an ongoing activity for the sector. How do we ensure there is a next generation of optical professionals, who can drive forward the work and agenda of the sector?

There is often a career path for optical leadership which involves attendance at the NOC, involvement with the LOC as an officer, participating on the leadership module, duties on a Primary Eyecare Company, as a CGPL for instance, and many of our members have come through this route. The sector is fortunate to have a strong cohort of people making the case, both optometrists and dispensing opticians.

Naturally, Locsu’s role encompasses leadership and succession planning. And it is an activity we take seriously. Last year, we launched a new coaching and mentoring service for LOCs. This will ensure those with leadership skills and knowledge pass that on to a new generation of optical professionals.

We have also boosted our support for those carrying out the CGPL role in Primary Eyecare Companies. A special forum and workshop took place at the NOC and a new online, facilitated community has been set up to share issues and best practice.

Candidates for this year’s leadership skills course have been announced. The list consists of: Alexander Howard (Derbyshire), Philip Cooke (Cheshire), Tom Mackley (Lancs & Morecambe Bay), Clare Griffin (Gloucestershire), Julia Maiden (Ashton, Leigh & Wigan), Ned Saunders (Brent & Harrow), Stephanie Cairns (Northum-berland, Tyne & Wear), Harpreet Kular (Worcestershire), Helen Haslett (Dorset), Sarah Pencott (Northumberland, Tyne & Wear).

So attend your LOC's AGM. It is your succession plan.
