100% Optical: Bold new frontiers

Andrew McCarthy-McClean and Emma White review the latest eyewear launches from the London event on February 24-26

Bird Eyewear: Rio Botanic Green & Athene Forest

Safilo

Spring/summer launches from fashion brand Carolina Herrera celebrate the joy of the season and hope it never ends while capturing classic and contemporary elegance.

Its Diva collection, pictured right, of trend-led sunglasses features oversized and chunky cat’s eye models that are studded with flower crystals.

Frame colour options include black with grey lenses, Havana with brown lenses, or red with blue lenses.

The House of Herrera 0224 spectacles are a modern cat’s eye shape with distinctive temples and rounded tips that carry a branded medallion.

Roger

Dutch brand Roger added four new styles to its Cartoon collection, which features an illustrative black or white outline to make the colour pop and gives the frame a 2D appearance.

The stainless steel models are designed to help wearers express their character, made possible by a Swiss Berlac paint finish.

The Aafje cat’s eye model in yellow, pictured right, has a full brow and slim lower rim, while Agent 327 in purple is a pilot silhouette with a cut-out bridge.

Booth & Bruce

Chunky, bold frames in the spring/summer collection return Booth & Bruce to its core design principles with a retro ’90s influence.

The bold and colourful styles draw inspiration from the brand’s English roots while adopting Mazzucchelli M49 bio-acetate across the majority of the collection.

Semi-transparent colour options, such as merlot, lemon fizz and nude velvet (3), highlight the core’s diamond patterned detailing.

Shapes move away from geometric edges that have been popular in recent years and towards bevelled acetate that plays with colour and light in traditional silhouettes.

Wolf Eyewear

Alpha, pictured, is the new collection designed to lead the Wolf Eyewear portfolio as its premium offering while reflecting its core values of inspiring, boldness and brilliance.

The British brand has committed to quality with its new range made from Italian acetate and Japanese titanium.

Round, rectangular and geometric models in the range feature triangular ‘A’ branding on the tips, as well as metal inlays and precision-engineered hinges, among a burst of colour and patterned finishes.

Avant Garde Optical

Introducing B Flex eyewear – described as all-round, durable, comfortable, value-for-money frames with adjustable temples.

Lighter than acetate, the recyclable, BPA-free models feature a 3.0 hinge with 360-degree rotation for maximum flexibility and are made from Siliflex patented material that can recover its shape when subjected to any deformation.

The magnetic frames can be paired with sun or night driving clips featuring polarised lenses, while a practical rubber coated steel wire cord with silicone stoppers attaches to the temple tips, pictured.

An interchangeable elastic head band can also attach on the temples to better grip the frames. Colourways include satin black and blue, dark grey and lime and black with brown, maroon or khaki.

Feb31st

Colour, art and sustainability are at the core of what was showcased by Italian brand Feb31st in the Studio area of 100% Optical.

The made-to-order frames are fully customisable and created from wood sourced from a controlled plantation and certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.

Its latest project sources shavings from Ancient Kauri wood, so no tree was cut down to harvest the materials.

Artwork can also be incorporated into the design of Feb31st’s frames and a model featuring Sandro Botticelli’s the Birth of Venus, pictured right, was on display at the show.

The brand also showcased frames cut from wooden word blocks, with song lyrics or poetry chosen by the wearer for a personal touch.

Bird Eyewear

Sustainability runs through Bird Eyewear’s core from its feet to its beak and its 2024 optical range is no different as it features recycled alloys and plant-based acetate models finished with natural oils and botanical dyes.

Frames were designed at the company’s new Nature Lab for research and development in Cornwall and are packaged in a zero-waste case that picked up a Love Eyewear Award at 100% Optical.

The standout model in the collection is Rio (pictured), a chunky, cat’s eye frame that is squared off for a bold look, which is softened by a transparent colour option inspired by the jungle and the ocean.

Morel

Feminine styles launched by French brand Morel follow the trend for oversized shapes, such as the Anna 2 (pictured) model.

The tall, circular, acetate silhouette is available in semi-transparent, grey, blue or purple and has a touch of glamour about it with silk worked through the patterned temples.

The Anna 3 frame is a cat’s eye shape with angular features that makes its larger size feel pronounced, especially across the steep curve of the brow.

Its colour options feature multiple tones that fade in and out of light and dark shades.

Both models have a patented screwless and solderless hinge that Morel said offers maximum comfort and lightness.

Woodys

Colours of the Colorado desert are the inspiration of Woodys’ spring/summer collection of frames made from Japanese beta-titanium and Italian Mazzuchelli bio-acetate.

Detailing includes a new five-axis OBE hinge in the women’s acetate range, engravings on the inner rim and gradient Zeiss lenses in the sunglass models.

Hexagonal butterfly model Lexi stands out for its multi-coloured laminations of light blue on the brow, semi-transparent greens around the lens and lower rim and an opaque orange acetate on opposing sides of the front.

The limited edition IconX sunglasses, pictured, offer a more artistic look with a smooth and sweeping lower front that turn into dramatic segments over the brow before exposing a metal bridge.

Peach and teal are paired on the acetate front with peach tips finishing the angular, teal-coloured acetate arms.

Demetz

The Improve sports frame features a modern round shape and Bora polarised lenses for improved visual comfort, which Demetz said reduces glare, eye strain and increases image clarity.

Whether playing sports, driving or spending time outdoors, the frames are designed to be durable and lightweight while filtering out harmful UV rays.

Gain (pictured) sunglasses for women are described as the ultimate accessory for passionate surfers featuring a ‘trendy shape and robust design’, Bora polarised and anti-reflective lenses plus UV protection.

Caron Eyewear

Glorious, Fit to Win (pictured right) and Be Bright were the latest models showcased at the Caron Eyewear stand for spring/summer 2024, each described as a testament to the designer’s dedication to beauty, comfort and wearability.

Glorious is defined by its sweeping curves and gentle bevels illuminating the brow of the frame and is available in raspberry red, crystal rose, turquoise or black.

Bold statement model Fit to Win features a shallow, square and angular silhouette with a precision-cut profile that is available in electric blue, black, fluorescent pink or crystal rose.

Be Bright showcases a geometric pattern and comes in black, deep purple, fluorescent yellow or bright red.

Nine

Larger eye sizes for men and coloured IP coated frames were showcased in the integrated block titanium collection (right, top) by Danish designers Nine.

Thin, clean cut models are milled from a solid titanium block and feature a hidden rim lock system.

Feminine frames from the Nine Pure collection (right, bottom) combine bio-based acetate made from castor plant seeds and Japanese beta titanium, yet still weigh less than nine grams.

Face à Face

Face à Face took inspiration from Japanese design in its latest collection, transitioning from last year’s Memphis selection.

Minimalist model Haori, pictured, (a traditional jacket worn over a kimono) combines wide sides like jacket sleeves with a slender waistband detail at the temple.

Colours are inspired by Japanese gardens from blue greens and indigo blue to magenta reds and azalea pinks.

Carar features bevelled bonding, a hand-polished finish, wide temples tips and superimposed coloured slices over a nature-inspired palette ranging from stormy grey to brown horn.

Mac Eyewear

Inspired by pop art and the ‘master of the abstract expressionist movement’, Jackson Pollock, the Genesis art optical collection includes metal and acetate styles in a selection of striking colour combinations.

Available in 50mm to 57mm eye sizes, all frames are supplied with a cloth, velvet case and Genesis mini shopping bag, along with point-of-sale materials, including display stands, hand mirrors and dispensing platforms for optical practices.

William Morris London

William Morris London relaunched its Gallery collection at 100% Optical, extending the iconic prints and fabrics from the William Morris Gallery to the outer sides of its eyewear, now including sunglasses.

The latest addition, a delicate and feminine model, Lodden (pictured) has a large repeating pattern with intricate scrolling flowers and foliage in gold, greens and silver grey.

The collection’s modern vintage styles, also including popular Strawberry Thief, Brother Rabbit and Riverwind, come in muted colours – plums, greens, navy and purple – with subtle WM monogram branding on the end tips.

Res Rei

Inspired by the world of exclusive fragrances, bio-acetate models Clover and Sage have joined the Essences family from Res Rei.

The frames are said to be craftedfor quality and comfort while offering elegance with a modern twist. Clover blends crystal, grey and opal pink, while Sage combines Havana, red and blue and green, blue and teal.

Six new frames have also been added to the Gentlemen Collection, including thicker fronts and temples and more masculine features.

The King model (pictured) presents extended 150mm temples and a generous 57mm eye size, catering to men with larger heads and facial features, while models Baron, Kaiser, Prince and Sultan were said to introduce a fresh aesthetic with new colour combinations, multiple front part bondings, and slender temples featuring a new decorated inner metal part.
