Mud, sweat and gears summed up a wet weekend in Bolton for the UK Ironman 2009 where Optician's Ironman Team finally got to fulfil their biggest challenge.

Fiona Molloy and Chris Bennett faced the ultimate sporting challenge of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile cycle and a full marathon run. Both took part in the UK Ironman 70.3 last year for Vision Aid Overseas. That race, at half the distance, was a challenge enough so both entered this event without really knowing if they would be able to finish.

Even by local standards the weather around Bolton had been pretty dire in the week running up to the event so the expo at the swim and start venue near Rivington reservoir was knee deep in mud even before the start.
