Ask Stephen Golding to describe a typical day as dispensing optician at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, and he would probably struggle to give you an answer. No day with his small department is the same, he would tell you, as with the number of specialities and consultants working at the hospital, 'anything could come in at any time'.
In the five years he has worked at the hospital, Golding has been challenged to specially make or adapt many of the spectacles he and his team dispense. One of his recent patients, Simon Bagley, presented Golding with a significant challenge to his design skills. Mr Bagley had glaucoma as a child, and as a result lost all sight in one eye, so it was of utmost importance to protect his remaining vision.
