When an optometrist is assessing athletes in a sports vision setting it is important that they do not forget the basic principles of eye examination.

These include assessments of visual function such as refractive error, ocular motility and ocular health. Once these basic assessments have been made, and any corrective measures instigated, it is possible to assess more complex aspects of visual function such as hand-eye coordination and peripheral awareness. This article covers the examination of an athlete with various visual difficulties and explains what steps were taken to help him.
