Opti-Munich 2008 was always going to be a big departure from previous years and nowhere was this more apparent than the size of the show and the visitor numbers. Last year, the show covered 45,000sqm and played host to 35,000 visitors and 600 exhibitors from 70 countries. This year those figures fell to 395 exhibitors from 21 countries in an area of 18,250sqm and visitor numbers dropped to 18,000.
Despite the fall in numbers, the new organiser for the event, GHM, insisted the change to a focused show for the German-speaking countries had been a success. Dieter Dohr, GHM managing director and the exhibition director of Opti-Munich, said: 'All the visitors were able to gain an overview of the market. All the decision-makers from the optics sector came to Munich for the fair, because this is the place where they knew they could gain a full picture of all that is happening in the sector, in a short space of time.'
