A week of news - a trip to the museum

Joe Ayling

Beer goggles, invisible glasses and Guinness contact lenses are some of the quirkier exhibits at the British Optical Association museum.

Optician attended the museum, at the College offices in Central London, last week to find curator Neil Handley playing a starring role.

Not only has he continued to deliver enthusiastic guided tours, for 1,000 people so far this year, but also posed for a painting of his hand holding an optical training device - see here.

The painting will soon go on sale, but Handley himself will be sticking around to add to the College's rich collection of optical history.

Of real interest to him are frames through the ages, cases of the earliest NHS spectacles and models of every eye disease under the sun.

The museum is free to the public as well as College members and comes recommended by this news desk. Beer goggles not required.
