A week of news – road safety needs enhanced vision

Another tragedy resulting from poor drivers' vision does little to support the DVLA's honesty policy when it comes to visual acuity.

The BBC reported how an 87-year-old who had been told by a practitioner he was not fit to drive went on to cause death by dangerous driving.

A new 6/12 visual acuity is all well and good, but tick boxes on application forms and relying on optical practices to police the situation for free undermines the change.

This case shows yet again people are reluctant to lose their freedom to drive, with terrible consequences. Many others just need simple vision correction to be roadworthy but will do anything to avoid going for an eye test.
