People will not only be living longer but also working longer, given the raising of the state pension age and abolition of compulsory retirement at 65. Changing health prospects, lifestyle and financial status mean that the needs and aspirations of older people are changing.

This has important implications for eye care professionals. The increasing demand for eye care services is likely to result in optometry taking on a wider role in the diagnosis and management of eye conditions in addition to their role in correcting refractive error. An understanding of the age-related changes that occur in the eye is essential to meet the challenges that lie ahead.
