How many of your patients drive? According to the Office for National Statistics' Census 2001, the proportion of households owning one car was almost unchanged between 1991 and 2001 at about 44 per cent. However, the proportion owning two cars had increased from 20 per cent to 23 per cent and three cars and more from 4 per cent to 6 per cent. A lot of people use the car for work and spend a lot of time on motorways, negotiating long distances on a regular basis. There are people who drive buses, trains, ambulances, vans or lorries for a living. We come across school run mothers or fathers driving to and from school in the winter months with the sun low in the sky and the road perfect for reflecting light especially when wet.
