In a Public Health Symposium moderated by Dr Satya Verma (Pennsylvania) the question was raised 'Are we ready for our baby-boomer patients?'. Verma estimated that there will be 86.5 million people aged over 65 years by 2050 and this would have significant consequences for optometrists. Bearing in mind that almost all over 85 years have lenticular and macular changes with sight impact, the need for adequate assessment and management will necessarily increase the work load upon eye care practitioners.
