Pupil assessment is an integral part of an eye assessment and is an important and objective way of assessing the function of the eye and the visual pathway. Though most humans are asymmetric, some difference between the size of the pupils is a common finding.
Anisocoria, if defined as a difference between each pupil diameter of 2mm or more, is less common. Even then, this is more often than not simply a physiological variation. However, it is important to establish whether this is indeed the case or instead the result of a disease process. As some of the causes of sudden onset anisocoria may have serious health implications, then being able to identify these albeit rare instances is an essential skill for the community eye care practitioner.
