'The main finding of the study was that there was no additional benefit from the addition of these nutrients. However, the study did provide useful evidence to justify a redesign of the original AREDS formula, since reducing the level of zinc and eliminating beta-carotene did not reduce the efficacy of the supplement. An exploratory sub-group analysis suggested that those participants with a low dietary level of L and Z may benefit from supplementation with these nutrients. The AREDS2 Research Group has issued a call for further research to support the inclusion of these carotenoids to the supplement in the future.'
