BCLA Preview: Getting into focus

Optician previews BCLA's Focus event, with both in-person and remote access

BCLA Focus will be held on Saturday, June 11 and Sunday, June 12 with interested parties able to either attend in-person at the Vox Conference Centre in Birmingham or stream the main lecture track remotely from home. Organisers say the past, present and future of contact lenses will be the focus at this new event, with global experts presenting lectures and communicating their knowledge at in-depth workshops.

The event is open to members and non-members of the BCLA and among the highlights of the programme will be a session presented by Professor James Wolffsohn and Professor Lyndon Jones, looking at what has been learned over the past 10 years that has changed clinical practice. The session will be chaired by BCLA president Neil Retallic, who says: ‘It is important to keep up with innovations in ophthalmic technology to offer the best options for a patient’s health and vision-related quality of life.’

The need for patients to enjoy successful soft contact lens wear over decades of life will be addressed by a session presented by Karen Walsh, David Webley and Krupa Patel. Sponsored by CooperVision, the lecture will explore what drives long-term satisfaction, including a discussion of what healthy lens wear entails, and how to maximise comfort and vision across a lifetime of wear.

Other highlights include a scleral lens ‘super-session’ with the Global Specialty Lens Symposium that will see an international panel discuss their experiences and viewpoints of incorporating scleral lenses into their practices, associate Professor Nicole Carnt and clinical Professor Deborah Jones discussing children and contact lenses, and Dr Shehzad Naroo and Professor Philip Morgan on what new discoveries will change clinical practice in the next 10 years.

For in-person attendees there will be an exhibition to explore during spare time, as well as workshops on topics such as corneal topography and biometry theory and practice, orthokeratology, refining and adjusting sclerals, demodex and advanced dry eye.
