As optometrists and dispensing opticians we are trained and qualified to help manage the residual vision of people with impaired vision by using optical aids and devices. However, the eyes that are not working well are invariably attached to a person who has to come to terms with their vision loss. As optical professionals our role is not specifically to treat and manage psychological adjustment to visual impairment, but as health care professionals we have a key role in identifying patients who are struggling to come to terms with their vision loss and putting referrals into place that can help our patients.
