Our eye movements involve a number of control systems comprised of brainstem nuclei, cranial nerves and higher brain centres, as well as relying on the integrity of the muscles themselves. They are classified into four divisions of slow (smooth pursuit), fast (saccadic), involuntary (vestibular) and vergence (disjugate) movements. OM tests the smooth pursuit eye system defined as a speed of less than 40 degrees per second. It is usually used to test versions in which rotary movements of both eyes are observed in the same direction, but can on occasion be useful to observe ductions in which one eye alone is observed.
