Case study: Monitoring change over time

Sanjeev Patel describes a case where accurate monitoring of a retinal lesion using an optomap wide field system helped to detect a choroidal melanoma early enough for medical management to prove effective

Our practice, which is based in Wigton, Leicestershire, had our first optomap device, the Optos P200Dx, installed in 2011. We realised the many benefits this technology offered. This includes the ability to assess a wide field of the retina and extend the view towards the periphery even without dilation. And, as this case shows, accurate visualisation allows monitoring of lesions and underlines the importance of being able to keep permanent and accurate records of patients’ retinal images so that any changes can be compared over time. The optomap images presented here showed the growth of the suspect lesion over time and information about these changes helped the patient to make informed decisions regarding his treatment and management when they were offered at the hospital.
