Contact lenses: His-toric-ally good

Optician presents a guide to some of the most useful toric contact lens products available to UK practices

Astigma DD

To be effective, Safilens says a toric daily disposable contact lens should properly stabilise and be consistent. Unlike a frequent replacement lens, it has to be thin and comfortable on first fitting.

In response, Safilens developed a new simple and effective toric lens design (pictured above) with minimum decentration between surfaces and with inner toricity.

The unique SleekForm stability design is said to use a minimum pure prism profile to achieve quick and precise orientation without the need of enhanced thickness zones in the lens.

The lens uses and also benefits from the company’s Fusion technology, in which the synergistic actions of hyaluronic acid and TSP normalise and keep the physiological relation between tear film and ocular surface stable with the aim of giving wearers natural and longer-lasting comfort.

Esencia Toric

Esencia, supplied in the UK by Positive Impact, is a unique soft quarterly replacement contact lens that is CE-marked and indicated for the correction and control of myopia progression in paediatric and adolescent wearers with spherical ametropia and/or astigmatism.

The lens has a customised, multi-aspheric power addition, modifying the peripheral retinal defocus as a method to reduce or eliminate visual factors that induce myopia progression while at the same time correcting the wearer’s myopia and astigmatism.

Esencia Toric is completely configurable for back optic zone radius, diameter and even the pupil aperture and has an extensive power range.

The design increases in plus power steadily from the pupil aperture to a full treatment power of +3.50D, ensuring there is no hyperopic defocus.

Backed up by a peer-reviewed clinical study and available in spherical format, the lens is said to be a cost-effective product for myopia management.
