Core subject 4 : Optical appliances

 The core subject for both dispensing opticians and optometrists is the same. However, as may be seen by the categories below, there is a different emphasis for each of the professions.

The dispensing of optical appliances is specifically noted under competency 4.4 for dispensing opticians - the ability to relate the development of a child's facial anatomy to the fitting of optical appliances. The competency for optometrists may be assumed to cover children as well as adults in the sections dealing with the selection and dispensing of a range of appliances.
