Simon Jones reports from the joint AIO/BABO conference in Bristol

This year’s Association of Independent Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians (AIO) conference had a slightly different feel to it. In previous years, the AIO has run its event in conjunction with the British Association of Behavioural Optometrists (BABO), but 2019’s event at the Marriott Hotel in Bristol’s city centre was the first to benefit from closer integration on the lecture and workshop programme to allow delegates to take part in sessions created by both
associations.

The main lecture programme included presentations on ophthalmic lens intolerance, artificial intelligence (AI), specialist sessions on retinal disease, developments in cataract treatment and naturally, behavioural optometry.

The AI lecture kicked off Saturday’s programme and was delivered by Moorfields Eye Hospital consultant paediatric ophthalmologist and director of digital innovation, Dr Peter Thomas.
