Do light shows impact eye safety?

Light trails in the winter and music festivals in the summer are both popular seasonal activities. Are there any risks? We invited Dr Douglas Clarkson to investigate

There has always been a certain fascination for the allure of bright and colourful lights as a means of social entertainment. In times of lesser technology, there could still be projected visual spectacles that would be well received today on account of their novelty and originality.  

In modern times, we are presented with the duality of every aspect of the technology and the potential associated level of risk. While our hearing may receive some high decibels at music festivals, we do not anticipate any detriment to our vision.  

For a whole raft of excellent reasons, extra care is generally taken to ensure the safety of such visual entertainments.
