As Optician goes to press, the festive season is beginning to get into full swing, so this week’s Echoes of the past takes a look at Optician’s ‘Christmas Number’, published on December 18 1964. Around the time the issue went to press, Martin Luther King Jr was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, Norway and the Pink Panther cartoon series aired for the first time.
A seasonal review of the year caught Optician’s eye this week. Very much in keeping with the editorial ethos of the special issue, ‘Gleanings of the Year’ was a more light-hearted, satirical look at some of the stories from 1964, rather than the usual serious profession-related events.
