This week’s Echoes of the Past has something of a frames feel to it, with a look at some of the retro eyewear adverts from the September 26 edition of Optician from 1975.

Zeiss and Silhouette both feature with period eyewear adverts, showing the trends for oversized round silhouettes.

A frame-related story in the news caught the eye of Optician. The old adage of men seldom making passes at gear girls who wear glasses didn’t ring true for a thief in south London. The culprit’s modus operandi was to approach young women wearing glasses and snatch their glasses before making off.

The first incident took place in Mitcham Road, Norbury, when a man wearing a large cardboard mask walked into a house through an open front door where he made the snatch and made off on foot. The second incident took place at a bus stop, also in Norbury. The thief’s approach was the same, but this time he made his getaway in a red car. A handkerchief was used instead to conceal his appearance.
